A Chance to win RM10,000

"A Safe City Is A Just City", is United Nations’ theme for 2007 World Habitat Day (WHD).

In conjunction with this day, which will be celebrated in Malaysia on November 22, the Housing and Local Government Ministry and the Eastern Regional Organisation for Planning and Human Settlements Malaysia (Earoph) have organised a competition for you to share your ideas on how to create a safe city.

Is this worth the hassle? Check out the prizes:

a) Category A (open to Malaysians and residents, including foreigners)

1st Prize: RM10,000.00 and certificate
2nd Prize: RM6,000.00 and certificate
3rd Prize: RM3,000.00 and certificate
Honorary Mention (10 nos): RM500 and certificate

b) Category B (students of higher learning institutes)

1st Prize: RM5,000.00 and certificate
2nd Prize: RM3,000.00 and certificate
3rd Prize: RM1,500.00 and certificate
Honorary Mention (10 nos): RM500 and certificate
Note: For students participating, entry form must be verified by a fulltime lecturer or Head of Department or Dean of the institution)

What is the purpose of this competition?

Improve the ability to provide social justice and eliminate threats to urban safety. Look into issues covering:
1) Crime and violence
2) Forced eviction
3) Insecurity of tenure
4) Natural and human made disasters

Provide decent living environment for the rich and the poor. Look into ability to provide:
1) Clean water
2) Sanitation
3) Transport
4) Electricity and other services

How can you work on it?

1) Identify an existing project or building, example:
a) Housing scheme
b) Housing complex
c) Housing neighbourhood
d) An apartment
e) A condominium
f) A shopping complex
g) An institution like schools
h) A commercial complex
i) A hotel
j) A public park

2) Be innovative and come up with ideas to enhance safety and eliminate crime, either by:
a) Planning
b) Design
c) Providing solutions

Presentations can be written (in English or Bahasa Malaysia), drawn or graphic (photographs, CD Roms or Power Point presentation) and submitted with entry forms obtained from the secretariat office or downloaded from www.earophmy.org.
