What's up in Myanmar (Burma)

I have decided to consolidate all messages I have received relating to what is happing in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma.
___________________________________________________________

Stand with the Burmese Protesters

When the Burmese last marched in 1988, the military massacred thousands. But if the world stands up and supports their struggle, this time they could succeed. We'll send our petition to United Nations Security Council members (including the dictatorship's main backer China) and to media at the UN, while also alerting the Burmese to our support:

Take action now
www.Avaaz.org

Hi, have you heard about the crisis in Burma?

Burma is ruled by one of the worst military dictatorships in the world.
This week Buddhist monks and nuns began marching and chanting prayers to
call for democracy. The protests spread and hundreds of thousands of Burmese
people joined in -- they've been brutally attacked by the military regime,
but still the protests are spreading.

I just signed a petition calling on Burma's powerful ally China and the UN
security council to step in and pressure Burma's rulers to stop the killing.
The petition has exploded to over 350,000 signatures in a few days and is
being advertised in newspapers around the world, delivered to the UN
secretary general, and broadcast to the Burmese people by radio. We're
trying to get to 1 million signatures this week, please sign below and tell
everyone!

Thank you for your help!

watchmyanmar sent you a video!

Hi all,

Perhaps passing this on might reach the people who matter.

After decades of military dictatorship, the people of Burma are rising – and they need our help. Marches begun by monks and nuns have snowballed, bringing hundreds of thousands to the streets. Now the crackdown has begun...

CAR ALMOST HIJACKED AT DSARA HEIGHTS !

Got this from a friend. Be careful when driving to or from office. In fact, be careful when drvg anywhere.

My boss almost kena carjacked yesterday.. She sent out an email to the entire department telling her story - as a caution to all single women drivers. It sounds damn scary. Can not imagine what I'll do if I was in her position. I've pasted her email here in its entirety. Girls, please be careful and be wary of your surroundings - bad things can happen DAY OR NIGHT - bad guys don't CARE anymore.

Here, her email:

colleagues,

i was chased and attacked by a group of men in 2 cars trying to hijack my car in the afternoon yesterday. i was driving my husband's car alone on my way back from mid valley at about 4.30pm and only noticed these 2 cars as I was turning left into jalan beringin, damansara heights. They came awfully close and fast which I thought strange as it was a residential area and full of road humps. Then the first car (which was a E class Mercedes) came to my side and the passenger (had a policeman's hat but not in uniform) had a walkie talkie and was gesturing for me to stop. When I didn't, he overtook and parked in front of me and the second car (which was the new 3 series BMW) was parked right behind me. the guy came up to my window and using his walkie talkie again, was frantically asking me to wind down - it was that split second that I realized that they weren't undercover cops (yes sounds silly now when one is rational!) and I just reversed and drove off. Both cars were chasing me trying to swerve and corner me.

I was stopped 3 times by them – the second time was the road downhill between SC and the Science Centre and the same guy from the Merc came out – this time with a parang. I reversed as far as I could – these people were definitely professionals and didn't want their cars damaged cos everytime I reversed, the bmw at the back also reversed. I thought I'd be safe going onto a public road so I went on the sprint highway – they continued to chase and managed to stop me again– and I was on the fast lane of sprint highway (right between the SC and Bukit Kiara) and there were plenty of traffic – and this time – they parked so close to me – one in front and one at the back and the guy with the parang came out and this time was smashing with full force at my driver's seat window. Another guy came from the black bmw and started hitting on my passenger seat window – there were plenty of cars but no one stopped or honked despite seeing these 2 men smashing my car. I just reversed not caring if my car got knocked and trying to get some space so that I can drive out and finally managed to. I lost them when I turned onto jalan damansara highway.

It is absolutely traumatizing as I, like many, only read about this.. but the audacity and desperation for them to be doing this in broad daylight and at such a public place is unimaginable. I am so thankful that I am ok but I have to write this because i know many of us take it for granted that it would not happen to us.. but it has happened and it will happen again. Please please be careful – one can never be vigilant enough. you've read it all:

1. ladies – don't drive home alone at night – they will target women driving alone – day or night.
2. don't stop when you're being chased
3. know that they're not the real cops when the proper police cars are not being used

I was given this no. by the inspector - 2274 4465 – it's the Bilik Gerakan in Brickfields and if you think you're being followed or chased – call this no. and they will send a mobile team who's nearest to where you are.

Have I been phished by established companies?

I have many emails sometimes directed to my junk mail box by mistake. So, whenever I can, I do check to see if I have missed messages from friends or people who have responded to articles I have posted on my blogs. So, how do I tell if it is safe for me to open up the email to read? Here are some pointers I have picked up:

1) The name of the sender is usually different from that on the email address.
2) The name of sender is gibberish.
3) The subject matter promotes things that I have not requested for or have no interest in.

I also do a search of the company the email came from, eg (name of company) scam, and see what comes up. Following is a very good example:

Message from: Yahoo! Photos Subject: Yahoo! Photos Is Closing - Action Required

I do have an account there but instead of opening up the mail and clicking on the link provided that may lead me to a bogus website, I goggled, "directmail@yahoo-inc.com scam" and discovered that someone on Yahoo! Answer has the same enquiry and that indeed Yahoo! Photos request is not a scam and that they want members to move their photos and they have recommended Flickr.

I also take the time to block senders who spam. You can find out what are the big companies whose members have been targeted by phishers from this article "How to Report an Email or Web Scam" posted on Fight Identity Theft.

And if you are wondering why I should believe the information and instruction posted on Fight Identity Theft; well, I have checked them out on Site Advisor.

How Smart Is Your Right Foot?

For those of you with some spare time in office...try it. Bet you will try it at least 50 times to see if you can outsmart your foot. Bet you can't!

1. While sitting at your desk, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles with it.

2. Now, while doing this, draw the number "6" in the air with your right hand...your foot will change direction!

I told you so...and there is nothing you can do about it. Bet your friends won't believe this either!

Why is this so? Answer from Science Made Simple:
"The left side of your brain, which controls the right side of your body, is responsible for rhythm and timing. The left side of your brain cannot deal with operating two opposite movements at the same time and so it combines them into a single motion. Try this with your right foot and left hand and you should have no problem!"

STAYING YOUNG

We all need to read this one over and over until it becomes part of who we are!

HOW TO STAY YOUNG

1. Try everything twice. On Madams tombstone (of Whelan's and Madam) she said she wanted this epitaph: Tried everything twice...loved it both times!

2. Keep only cheerful friends.
The grouches pull you down. (keep this in mind if you are one of those grouches)

3. Keep learning : Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain get idle. "An idle mind is the devil's workshop." And the devil's name is Alzheimer's!

4. Enjoy the simple things.

5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath. And if you have a friend who makes you laugh, spend lots and lots of time with HIM/HER.

6. The tears happen: Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. LIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love: Whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county, to a foreign country, but NOT to where the guilt is.

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

11. Forgive now those who made you cry. You might not get a second time.

And if you don't send this to at least 4 people - who cares? But do share this with someone.

Lost time can never be found.

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

BEAUTIFUL Women Month

. . And all she wants to do is,

Is dance, dance, dance . . .

Did you know that it's Beautiful Women Month?

Well, it is and that means you !!!

I'm supposed to send this to FIVE BEAUTIFUL WOMEN,

And you are one of them !!!

Below is a wonderful poem Audrey Hepburn wrote

When asked to share her "beauty tips."

It was read at her funeral years later.

For attractive lips, speak words of kindness...

For lovely eyes , seek out the good in people.

For a slim figure , share your food with the hungry.

For beautiful hair , let a child run his/her fingers through it once a day.

For poise , walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone...

People, even more than things, have to be restored,

Renewed, revived, reclaimed,and redeemed;

Never throw out anyone.

Remember, if you ever need a helping hand,

You will find one at the end of each of your arms.

As you grow older,you will discover that you have two hands ;

One for helping yourself, and the other for helping others.

If you share this with another woman,
Something good will happen.
You will boost another woman's self esteem,
And she will know that you care about her.

It's BEAUTIFUL Women Month

TAG YOU'RE IT!

Dance On!!!
